We used a Canon 5d for this one, which has me hungering for a DSLR now. This was the commercial we built the dolly for and we employed it in every live action shot except for when the glove gets put on. Excessive? Yes. Do we care? No. Hope you enjoy it!

Chris Mitchell, the owner, has been great to work with and has really help alot with getting us work and building a reputation. This commercial also employs our new dolly! A little wobbly at one point, but we’ll smooth that out as we get more used to using it.

Gamesboro commercial is also complete and something that’ll be posted tomorrow, hopefully, if all goes well with my next render of it.

Be on the lookout for a new layout soon! The blog aspect will still be here, but in a less prominent fashion. Also, new information concerning the Automata project is on it’s way!

I’ll have some footage of it in action this week, since we’re going to be using it to be using it for a commercial. In other news, I’ve begun work on Carl’s faceplate. He’s been resined, fiberglassed and is currently in the process of having quite a few layers of bondo applied to him. I’ll have pictures of this once there’s something worth showing.

Three jobs this week and a potential fourth, so here’s hoping. We’re also now shooting for a trailer release for Automata by mid-July to show off.

Cheers,
Travis Phillips

We’re not dead, don’t worry. Despite trying to start a legitimate company, we’re still college students and college students all, inevitably, encounter finals week. I’ve just finished trans-versing through said gauntlet and it’s yet to be seen whether or not I slew my foe. If all goes well, we’ll begin work on our dream project (my dream project). I’ve already begun work on the script so we can get the ball rolling. What dream project you ask? Why, Automata, of course.

We (I) will be also filming a few more commercials over the next few weeks since Bryan will be out of town till July. So, that side of things is still going well and we’re learning more and more as we go. We (we) also made a new friend recently, one Brent Foxwood, who’ll be helping us fine tune some of our approaches. We’re looking forward to it.

Also, if any of you (hypothetical) are curious as to just what Automata is, I suggest you follow the links below that follow the synopsis:

Automata is a nineteen-twenties crime fiction which unfolds in a time where “machine intellect” has been outlawed. It wasn’t always, certainly, and the problem of what to do with the existing “stock” of fully sentient, mechanical citizens endures. Detective Regal and his stenophone Carl Swangee traverse the margin where these worlds overlap.

Page 1
Page 2
Page 3
Page 4
Page 5
Page 6

We plan on turning this into a live action “TV Pilot” of sorts. We’ll only be doing Page 1 + some additional scenes for an intro based off of Jerry Holkins writings concerning it. This is the main reason I even got into this line of work to begin with: to make this. So, it’s nice to see it starting to take some kind of form (no matter how infantile). More info to come as I have it to give.

Cheers,
Travis

Just a brief update, since I haven’t had anything to really report in a while. We have officially worked out a commercial deal with “The Spot” that I can’t be happier about. Hopefully filming this weekend, but that’s yet to be seen. We’re also finishing a job for Pladd Dot this weekend, so at least things are busy! It’s nice to see our momentum ramping up.

I’ve been working on ironing out a few more details to my short story I want to make before we start work on Automata again. I really hope to have details on that sometime this month. Just really depends on us acquiring a little bit more equipment and sitting down to write the thing.

Speaking of equipment. Our next purchase is going to be a steadicam from a company called Hague. A steadicam, for those that don’t know, is a device you attach your camera to for stabilizing moving shots. This is how you get your shots to “glide” smoothly as opposed to the jarring, back and forth motions one associates with a handheld shot. Here’s a link to the one we’re going to purchase.

Hague Mini Motion-Cam

After that, we’ll probably work on a dolly but that’s really a DIY project. More on that later.

Finished shooting on Friday. Currently finishing up the sequences for the commercial, then we’ll go back and add sound effects, music and voice overs. A larger update will follow when the product is finished, but here’s a two shots from what I’m working on to tide over the “seething masses.”

This is the current ending logo I came up with for the commercial, using Gamesboro’s current logo and other stock I have. Image comes flying in from behind the camera and crushes some text that was previously there. Still adding a few things like information, small debris and dust coming up from the cracks, etc.

This is an example of the lighting effect we were trying to accomplish for the commercial. A small cone of light on a wooden floor in an attempt to make it feel like only the character exists. Worked sometimes, didn’t to my satisfaction in others.

More to come!
